Build the bed from tall to low.

Choose the crop you most want to harvest. Give it the best light and support, then use herbs, quick vegetables and flowers to fill the reachable edges.

Let height decide the first draft.

Place tall, trellised crops where they will cast the least unwanted shade. Keep low plants near the edge so watering, harvesting and replanting stay easy.
